Manchester is located in Hillsborough County, in south-central New Hampshire. It sits along the Merrimack River and is 20 miles from the Massachusetts border. Nicknamed The Queen City, Manchester is the largest city in all of northern New England, which includes the states of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. The city contains 33 square miles of land and 1.9 square miles of water.
Manchester’s metro area is one of the fastest growing in New England. In 2009, the city was voted as the Second Most Tax Friendly City in America by Kiplinger. During the same year, Manchester also ranked 13th in CNN’s 100 Best Places to Live and Launch a Business in America. The city was also named the Number One Small City in the East in 1998 by Money Magazine.
The main retailer in Manchester is The Mall of New Hampshire. Located in Manchester’s downtown area is the Verizon Wireless Arena, which seats over 10,000 patrons. This arena hosts a variety of sporting events, theatrical productions, concerts and fairs. A smaller venue in Manchester’s downtown is the John F. Kennedy Memorial Coliseum, which seats approximately 3,000.
Manchester has many cultural landmarks. They include the historic Palace Theatre, the Franco-American Center, the New Hampshire Institute of Art, the Manchester Historic Association, the Massabesic Audubon Center, the Millyard Museum, the Amoskeag Fishways Learning and Visitors Center, the Max I. Silber Library and the Lawrence L. Lee Scouting Museum. Also located in Manchester is the Currier Museum of Art, which featured the Zimmerman House, designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The house was listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is considered by many to be a work of art. The Zimmerman House is the only Wright home in New England that is open to the public.
Manchester is also home to many schools and universities. These include the Chester College of New England, the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Services, the New Hampshire Community Technical College, the New Hampshire Institute of Art, Saint Anselm College, Southern New Hampshire University, Springfield College School of Human Services and the University of New Hampshire at Manchester (UNH),
According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau, Machester was home to 107,219 people. This included 44,247 households and 26,105 families. The population in 2007 was estimated to be 108,580.
